South Miami is a city in the Miami-Dade county area of Florida, and nestled directly in the Miami metropolitan area. On a smaller scale, South Miami still enjoys all the beauty, amenities and Floridian charm as the busier portions of downtown Miami. The area was originally home to nomadic Native American tribes such as the Tequesta, the Calusa and the Jaega, and it is estimated that they were in the area centuries before white pioneers eventually came. The first arrival was via pioneers that came through Coconut Grove, and the first noted person of interest is Wilson Alexander Larkins, who purchased land west of Red Road and Sunset Drive, where he built a barn for his livestock. Over the course of history, the development of more agricultural amenities and the development of the Florida East Coast Railway, South Miami began to take shape along with the rest of Miami. Now, it stands as a beautiful portion of the city that many have come to love both living in and visiting.
South Miami gets the typical Florida experience with high heats and high humidity stretching throughout the year. Very rarely does the temperature drop beneath fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The most humid months tend to be June through August, and the precipitation is noticeable. South Miami can also experience heavy rainfall and occasional thunderstorms, which rarely leads to flooding from the nearby bodies of water.
